Satellite Monitoring of the Dust Storm over Northern China on 15 March 2021

Northern China was hit by a severe dust storm on 15 March 2021, covering large area and bring devastating impact to degree that unprecedented in more than decade. In the study, we carried out day-and-night continuous monitoring path of moving dust, using multi-spectral data from Chinese FY-4A satellite combined with Japanese Himawary-8 visible near-infrared, mid-infrared far-infrared bands. We monitored whole process weather occurrence, development, transportation extinction. The HYSPLIT(Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory) backward tracking results showed following two main sources affecting Beijing during north storm: one is western Mongolia; other arid semi-arid regions northwest China. Along storm, upper air mass, mainly Siberia, brought significant decrease temperature. transport shown HYSPLIT consistent revealed monitoring. weather, which originated Mongolia, developed into “3.15 storm” China, lasting 40 h, distance 3900 km, caused decline quality northern Korean peninsula regions. It most past 20 years east Asia.
